William Henry Hope
Chimera is presenting two operas of complete contrast in time and style, but both exploring the timeless delights of love and affection. Below is a snapshot.
‘The Telephone’ by Gian Carlo Menotti translation etc. A one-act opera comedy for two singers. Ben is trying to ask Lucy to marry him but the telephone – an awkward third party in the relationship – is always ringing at the crucial moment, and clueless Lucy is lost in endless chatter.
‘Dido and Aeneas’ by Henry Purcell – Novello Edition etc. When Aeneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and Dido, the Queen of Carthage, fall in love. However, when Aeneas leaves Carthage to found the new Rome, Dido dies from a broken heart.
